How the random NBA team generator works

The random NBA team generator puts all 30 NBA teams on one wheel and picks one for you. Each result names the team and where it sits in the league, for example “Western Pacific” for a Pacific Division team in the Western Conference. People mostly use it to start a 2K save with a team they did not choose, to hand out teams among friends, or to settle which game goes on the TV.

Using the wheel

1. Hit Spin in the wheel’s center. A click anywhere on the wheel or Ctrl + Enter also starts it.
2. Watch the pointer on the right. Wherever it rests when the wheel stops is your team.
3. Read the result: team name plus conference and division.
4. Close it with “Done”, take the team off the wheel with “Remove it”, or go straight to “Spin again”.

Want more suspense? The Settings tab lets you stretch the spin from 1 second up to 30. You can also switch on the mystery wheel, which hides the team names on the wheel until the result appears.

Conference and division filters

Open the Options tab to narrow the NBA team wheel. There are two filter groups:

• Conference: Eastern, Western (15 teams each)
• Division: Atlantic, Central, Southeast, Northwest, Pacific, Southwest (5 teams each)

All chips start checked. A team stays on the wheel only when both its conference and its division are checked.

Atlantic, Central and Southeast are the Eastern divisions. Northwest, Pacific and Southwest are the Western ones. A mismatched pair, such as Western with only Atlantic checked, leaves an empty wheel. If the count under the wheel says 0 entries, check a matching chip.

Some quick setups:

• East only: uncheck Western.
• One division: uncheck the other five division chips.
• Two divisions head to head: keep only Pacific and Atlantic checked for a 10-team wheel.

For a hand-picked list, open “Choose items” and tick or untick single teams. Press Clear all, then tick only the teams in your league, and the wheel spins just those.

Ideas for the NBA team wheel

NBA 2K rebuilds

Start a MyNBA save with whatever team the wheel gives you and build from there. Some players add house rules, such as spinning a second team and trading only with that one.

Handing out teams in a group

For a 2K league, or a group chat where everyone adopts a team for the season, switch on “Remove each winner automatically” in Settings. Once a result is closed, that team is gone from the wheel, so ten friends get ten different teams. The “Restore N removed” button in the Options tab brings every team back for the next round.

Filters can change mid-draft. Teams that have been removed stay removed until you restore them.

Pickup games

Give each squad at the gym an NBA name for the day. Spin once per squad.

What to watch tonight

Several games on and no strong feelings? Spin and watch the game that team is in. If the team is not playing, spin again.

Trivia challenges

Spin a team and see who can name the most players from its current roster. The wheel picks the topic and your friends argue about the answers.

Why you can trust the result

The pick is made before the animation starts, using crypto.getRandomValues, the cryptographic random generator built into your browser. The wheel then turns to the slice that was drawn. Every team on the wheel gets one equal slice, so no team is favored.

Your filters, removed teams, settings and past results are stored in your browser’s local storage. There is no account, and “Reset this wheel” in Settings clears it all.
