A random team generator that keeps teams even
This random team generator takes a list of names and splits it into teams in one click. You choose how many teams you want, or how many people should be on each one, and the tool shuffles the list and deals everyone out. Unlike most tools on this site, it is not a wheel. There is nothing to spin, and you get the full set of teams at once.
It is made for teachers, coaches, camp leaders and meeting hosts who want a split nobody can argue with, and no one left to be picked last.
How to make random teams
- Type or paste your names into the box, one per line. Blank lines are ignored, and a line under the button shows how many names are in the list.
- Under “Split by”, choose Number of teams or People per team, then enter a number from 1 to 500.
- To use part of the list, enter a number in Use only. The tool draws that many people at random and leaves the rest out.
- Press Generate teams. Each team appears as a card with its name and head count.
- Want a different mix? Press Generate teams again for a fresh shuffle.
You need at least two names. The page loads with twelve sample names so you can try it before pasting your own.
Team names, captains and rules
Open “Team names and rules” to type your own team names, one per line. The same panel has two rule boxes. In Keep together, list people who should share a team, such as “Ava, Liam”. In Keep apart, list people who should not, such as “Noah, Mia”. Use one group per line. If there are too few teams to meet every keep apart rule, a message tells you.
To balance by skill, grade or age, write a label after each name and a comma: “Ava, Beginner”. Turn on Balance teams by label and each label is spread as evenly as possible across the teams. Spell each label the same way every time.
Turn on Pick a captain for each team and one random member of each team is marked as captain. The New captains button picks again without changing the teams.
How uneven lists are handled
With no rules, people are placed one at a time on the smallest team, so team sizes never differ by more than one.
- Number of teams. 10 names into 3 teams gives one team of 4 and two teams of 3.
- People per team. The tool works out how many teams are needed, rounding up, then spreads people evenly. 13 names at 4 per team gives four teams: one of 4 and three of 3. Nobody ends up alone on a leftover team.
If you ask for more teams than you have names, each person gets a team of their own. Keep together groups and label balancing take priority, so they can make the sizes less even.
Copying and exporting
Copy teams writes one line per team, such as “Team 1: Ava, Kai, Noah”. Download CSV saves teams.csv with Team, Name, Label and Captain columns. Download image saves a picture of the team cards, ready for a slide or a group chat.
Your name list, rules and settings are saved in this browser. The generated teams are not, so copy or download them before you leave.
Use it as a random group generator
- PE and practice. Paste the roster, set the number of teams, and start the scrimmage without picking sides.
- Group projects. Set People per team to 4 and keep two chatty friends apart.
- Workshops and breakout rooms. Split attendees into discussion groups and paste the list into the meeting chat.
- Trivia and game nights. Shuffle the guests into even teams as people arrive.
Is the split fair?
The list is shuffled with your browser’s cryptographic random generator, and every possible order is as likely as any other. Team 1 has no advantage over Team 3. Rules and labels only change the result in the ways you ask for.

Frequently asked questions
What happens when the names do not divide evenly?
With no rules set, team sizes never differ by more than one. For example, 10 names split into 3 teams gives one team of 4 and two teams of 3. Keep together groups, keep apart rules and label balancing come first, so they can make the sizes less even.
How many names and teams can it handle?
You need at least two names, and the number box accepts 1 to 500 for either teams or people per team. The name list itself has no set cap, and the Use only box lets you draw a smaller random group from a long roster.
Can I balance teams by skill or keep certain people apart?
Yes. Write a label after a comma, such as 'Ava, Beginner', and turn on Balance teams by label to spread each label evenly. Under Team names and rules you can also list people to keep together or keep apart, one group per line.
Are my teams saved if I close the page?
Your name list, rules and settings are saved in your browser, but the generated teams are not. Use Copy teams, Download CSV or Download image before you leave the page.
How does the tool randomize the teams?
It shuffles the list using your browser's cryptographic random generator, then places people one at a time on the team with the fewest members, choosing at random when teams are tied. With no rules set, every person has the same chance of landing on any team.
Can I rename the teams?
Yes. Open Team names and rules and type one team name per line. Any team without a name from your list is labeled Team 1, Team 2 and so on.
