What the random question generator is for
The random question generator hands you one conversation starter at a time when nobody knows what to say. Press a button and you get something like “What chore do you secretly enjoy?” or “If animals could talk, which one would be the rudest?” It suits dinner tables, classrooms, first days at a new job, long drives and journaling, anywhere a good question beats small talk about the weather.
There are 189 questions in the deck, all clean.
How to use it
- Choose the sets you want under Show. All three are on at first.
- Press Next, the space bar or the right arrow key for a question.
- Answer it yourself or pass it around the group.
- Press Previous or the left arrow key if you want to return to one.
The counter shows how many questions are left. Questions you have drawn collect in the Seen so far list, so you can scroll back to a good one later. Start over shuffles a fresh deck.
The three sets
General (79 questions)
Works with anyone, including strangers. Favorite seasons, dream jobs, earliest memories, what you would do with an extra hour each day.
Friends (56 questions)
Written for people who already know each other. Many ask about “us” or “our group”, such as shared trips and inside jokes. The random question generator for friends shows only this set.
Couples (56 questions)
Gentle questions for two people in a relationship: date ideas, small habits, shared plans. There is a page with just these too, the random question generator for couples.
Ideas for using it
Morning meeting icebreaker
Keep only General on. One question per meeting, and everyone gives a one sentence answer.
Family dinner
Put a phone in the middle of the table. Whoever answered last presses Next for the following person.
Writing and journaling prompts
Draw one question each day and write a paragraph in answer. Use the copy button to paste it at the top of your notes.
ESL and speaking practice
Teachers can project a question and give students a minute to answer out loud in full sentences. The questions are short and use everyday words.
Waiting in line
When a queue is long, two people can trade answers to a handful of questions and the wait feels shorter.
Tips for better answers
Ask one follow up before you move on, such as “Why that one?” Give everyone the option to pass. Short answers are fine, and the best conversations often start with a one word reply.
A fair draw every time
The deck is shuffled with your browser’s cryptographic random generator (crypto.getRandomValues), and each question appears once per round. It all runs in your browser, and the page is free with no account. If you want a game with yes or no confessions instead, try the never have I ever questions deck.

Frequently asked questions
How many questions does the random question generator have?
There are 189 questions in three sets: 79 General, 56 Friends and 56 Couples. A couple of questions belong to two sets at once.
Can I hide the couples or friends questions?
Yes. Turn off any chip under Show and those questions leave the deck. Your choice is saved in this browser for next time.
Are the questions appropriate for school?
The General set is. It covers food, travel, hobbies, memories and silly hypotheticals. The Friends and Couples sets are clean but are written for people who know each other, so turn them off in class.
Can I copy a question into a chat?
Yes. Press the copy button next to Next and the current question goes to your clipboard.
Does the generator repeat questions?
No question repeats until you have seen every one in your current filter. After that the deck reshuffles and starts a new round.
Why did nothing show up?
All the chips are off. Turn on at least one set and a question appears.
