A random girl name generator for quick ideas

This random girl name generator gives you a list of girls’ first names in one click, with an optional last name. Writers use it to name a character on the spot. Game hosts use it for a role nobody planned. Parents to be use it to see names they had not thought of. It is free, there is no account, and it runs in your browser.

The pool holds 196 first names. It mixes current favorites such as Hazel, older names like Mabel, and names from many cultures, such as Priya.

    How to generate girl names

    1. Type how many names you want in “How many names”. Any number from 1 to 50 works, and the default is 10.
    2. Decide whether you want a surname. Flip “Add a last name” on for full names, or leave it off.
    3. Press Generate. A new list replaces the old one each time.
    4. Tap the copy icon next to a name to copy just that one, or press Copy all to copy the whole list, one name per line.

A first batch is already waiting when the page opens, so you can start reading right away.

    The options

    First names or full names

With the switch off you get a clean column of first names that is easy to scan. With it on, each name gets a last name from a list of 299 common surnames from many backgrounds. That helps when you need a name that sounds like a real person in a story or a mock form.

    No repeats in a batch

Each list has no duplicates. Ask for 50 and you get 50 different names. Press Generate again for a fresh set.

    Your settings are remembered

The count and the last name switch are saved in your browser’s local storage. Come back tomorrow and the tool is set up the way you left it.

    Ways to use it

    Naming a character

Stuck on the name of a side character, a classmate in a scene, or a narrator? Generate 10, read them out loud in a line of dialogue, and keep the one that sounds right for the age and setting.

    Baby name brainstorming

Set the count to 50 and skim. Write down any that make you pause. Then say each one with your family name and check the initials. Generate a few more batches over a week and see which names keep catching your eye.

    Placeholder and test data

Turn on last names and copy a list into a spreadsheet when you need sample profiles for a demo or a form test. The names are random pairings, so they are not meant to point to anyone real.

    Games, dolls and pets

Kids can pick names for dolls, stuffed animals or a new kitten. Party games that need secret identities work well too: each guest takes the next name on the list.

    Fair and random

Each name is drawn with your browser’s cryptographic random generator (crypto.getRandomValues). Nothing is ranked or weighted, so a rare name has the same chance as a popular one.

    Frequently asked questions

How many girl names can this generator pick from?

There are 196 girls' first names in the list. When you turn on the last name switch, each one is paired with a surname from a separate list of 299.

Why do I only see first names?

The 'Add a last name' switch is off by default, so you get first names only. Turn it on in the panel next to the results and press Generate again to get full names.

Can the same name show up twice?

Not in the same batch. Every list you generate has no duplicates, but a name you saw in one batch can come back in the next one.

Are common names more likely to come up?

No. The list is not weighted by popularity. Every first name has the same chance on every pick, whether it is a top name today or an old-fashioned one.

Is it okay to use these names for a baby?

Sure, as a starting point. Treat the list as a brainstorm, then look up each name's meaning, origin and spelling yourself before you decide.
