Random number generator 1-6 as a die
Lost the die from a board game? The random number generator 1-6 gives you the same odds as a standard six sided die. Spin the wheel and the number that lands is your roll. It runs in the browser, so any phone at the table can do the job.
If you only need to pick a number between 1 and 6 for something else, such as a chore or a group, it works just as well.
Rolling with the wheel
- Leave No repeats off. A die has no memory, and neither should your roll.
- Press Spin in the center, click the wheel, or press Ctrl + Enter.
- Move your piece by the number in the result box and choose Done.
- Pass the phone along, or let one person spin for everyone.
Set the spin time to one or two seconds in the Settings tab so turns move fast.
Options that match game rules
Skip list for house rules
Some games say “roll again on a 1” or “a 6 does not count”. Type those numbers in Numbers to skip and the wheel leaves them out. With one number skipped, each of the other five has a 1 in 5 chance.
Results tally
The Results tab counts every number and keeps a log. It works as a roll history if someone forgets what they rolled last turn.
Sound and mute
The wheel ticks as it spins. Tap the mute button under the wheel for a quiet game night.
Uses beyond board games
- Exercise die. Map each number to a move: 1 = squats, 2 = push-ups, 3 = lunges, 4 = plank, 5 = jumping jacks, 6 = rest.
- Story games. Roll to decide which of six plot twists happens next.
- Classroom groups. Six tables, one spin to pick who shares first.
- Kids’ games that need a die when the real one has rolled under the couch.
How the roll is made
Every number has a 1 in 6 chance, about 17 percent. The roll comes from your browser’s cryptographic random generator and is settled before the wheel moves. Two sixes in a row happen about once in 36 pairs of rolls, so streaks are expected.
For several dice at once, totals and other die sizes, use the dice roller. Games that need a pair of dice work better with the two dice roller.
Frequently asked questions
Can this replace a six sided die?
Yes. Each number from 1 to 6 has a 1 in 6 chance, about 17 percent, just like a fair die. Leave No repeats switched off, because a real die can roll the same number twice.
Can I use it instead of two dice?
Not directly. Two dice give totals from 2 to 12, and 7 comes up far more often than 2 or 12. Spin this wheel twice and add the numbers, or use a two dice roller.
How do I handle a house rule like rerolling ones?
Type 1 in the Numbers to skip box. The wheel then picks from 2 to 6, with a 1 in 5 chance for each number.
Is a virtual die fairer than a real one?
A cheap real die can be slightly off balance, and a wheel cannot. Each result here comes from your browser's cryptographic random generator.
Can I check whether the rolls look even?
Open the Results tab. It counts how many times each number has come up. Over a few dozen spins some numbers will lead, which is normal luck.
