Easy things to draw for beginners and kids
If you are new to drawing, the hardest step is picking something you can actually finish. This page gives you easy things to draw, one random idea at a time, and each one can be built from a few basic shapes. Think “A sun peeking over hills”, “A castle made of squares” or “A train with three cars”. No art skills needed, just a pencil and paper.
The deck has 91 ideas. Parents, teachers and grown up beginners can all use it.
How to use it
- Press Next, the space bar or the right arrow key to get an idea.
- Read it out loud if a child is drawing.
- Draw it, then color it in.
- Press Next for a new one, or Previous to go back.
The counter tells you how many ideas are left. You will not see a repeat until all 91 have come up. Start over shuffles a new round and clears the Seen so far list.
Drawing tips for beginners
Break it into shapes
Every idea here starts with a shape. A house is a square with a triangle on top. An owl is two circles, one big and one small. A rocket is a long rectangle with a triangle nose. Find the shapes first, then join them.
Draw lightly first
Sketch with soft, light pencil lines. Once the shape looks right, go over the lines you want to keep with a darker stroke and erase the rest.
Draw big
Fill most of the paper. Tiny drawings are harder to control, especially for small hands.
Color last
Wait until the outline is done. Then pick two or three colors, not the whole box. It keeps the picture clear.
Try it twice
Draw the same idea a second time right away. The second version is almost always neater, because your hand already knows the shapes.
Who it is for
Young kids
Read the idea aloud and draw along with them. Kids who cannot read yet can still pick by pressing Next and asking you what it says.
Classroom early finishers
Keep the page open on a class tablet. Students who finish work early press Next and draw one idea on scrap paper.
Adult beginners
Draw one idea every day for two weeks. Easy subjects let you practice steady lines and simple proportions without getting stuck on hard details.
Rainy recess and sick days
The ideas are quick, so a child can make a stack of drawings and hang them up as a little gallery.
A fair, random order
The deck is shuffled with your browser’s cryptographic random generator, so the next idea is a surprise every time. It is free and needs no account. When easy feels too easy, try cute things to draw for little animals and characters. For more variety, the what to draw generator mixes in every idea type.
